Summary

A timeless whodunnit with the fascinating Mitford sisters at its heart, The Mitford Trial is inspired by a real-life murder in a story full of intrigue, affairs and betrayal。

It's former lady's maid Louisa Cannon's wedding day, but the fantasy is shattered shortly after when she is approached by a secretive man asking her to spy on Diana Mitford - who is having an affair with the infamous Oswald Mosley - and her similarly fascist sister Unity。

Thus as summer 1933 dawns, Louisa finds herself accompanying the Mitfords on a glitzy cruise, full of the starriest members of Society。 But the waters run red when a man is found attacked, with suspects everywhere。

Back in London, the case is taken by lawyer Tom Mitford, and Louisa finds herself caught between worlds: of a love lost to blood, a family divided, and a country caught in conflict。

I wasn't sure how to rate this, as although it's an enjoyable 'whodunnit', the writing is unsophisticated。 You can tell the author is a journalist as the chapters read more like a 1000 word piece on X event。 I have read another in this series previously, and I didn't recall the writing being as poor as this。 It's a bit 'and then he said and then she said and then he he replied'。 I enjoyed the story, but I prefer something with a bit more depth I wasn't sure how to rate this, as although it's an enjoyable 'whodunnit', the writing is unsophisticated。 You can tell the author is a journalist as the chapters read more like a 1000 word piece on X event。 I have read another in this series previously, and I didn't recall the writing being as poor as this。 It's a bit 'and then he said and then she said and then he he replied'。 I enjoyed the story, but I prefer something with a bit more depth 。。。more

I still enjoy this series of audiobooks。 although I understand that the self-centered sisters are a product of their class and times, I’m becoming a little weary of them。 Let’s find a silver lining for Louisa。

After having just recently finished the previous book in this series, this one was very disappointing。 I predicted the "twist" before it happened, and the story itself was very slow and drawn out。 After having just recently finished the previous book in this series, this one was very disappointing。 I predicted the "twist" before it happened, and the story itself was very slow and drawn out。 。。。more

Too naive for me。I found the plot boring and predictable。 Without the Mitford sister's it would have been totally bland and I was left wishing for a deeper insight into pre war sentiments especially about Oswald Mosley。 Too naive for me。I found the plot boring and predictable。 Without the Mitford sister's it would have been totally bland and I was left wishing for a deeper insight into pre war sentiments especially about Oswald Mosley。 。。。more

While I was interested in the main character, Louisa, I found the novel ultimately disappointing and annoying。 Louisa has been a Lady’s maid to various of the Mitford Sisters。 These are actual historical figures, some who became writers, others who became fascists。 In the early scenes, I found it difficult to distinguish one sister from another。 Maybe the author assumes that we know them already? The author would also flip from one time period to another, 1933 when the murder took place to 1931, While I was interested in the main character, Louisa, I found the novel ultimately disappointing and annoying。 Louisa has been a Lady’s maid to various of the Mitford Sisters。 These are actual historical figures, some who became writers, others who became fascists。 In the early scenes, I found it difficult to distinguish one sister from another。 Maybe the author assumes that we know them already? The author would also flip from one time period to another, 1933 when the murder took place to 1931, then back to 33, then forward to 35 and the trial, then back to 33 and back to 35 and… This authorial strategy was dizzying and ultimately annoying。 The mystery was reasonably well constructed and the descriptions of the cruise ship and the people were good。 However, although Louisa ultimately understands what happened, it’s an ugly and disappointing revelation that leaves one disappointed in everyone involved。 So, while I enjoyed some of the time I spent with Louisa, I had to drag myself through the last 30 pages, and won’t be reading others in the series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’ve read the other books in this series and enjoyed them, but I didn’t like this one as much。 Part of the problem was the alternating storylines- I don’t think alternating between the murder on the Princess Alice and the trial 2 years later worked very well。 At least in the audiobook。 The other problem was the Louisa-turns-spy storyline。 It wasn’t very believable and I feel like she wasn’t a very good spy in the end?

I thought this would be a trial of one of the Mitford sisters, but instead it is a trial where Tom Mitford played a minor role。 I found the close with the explanation of what was fact and what was real more interesting in the book itself。

I know it's based on actual people, which limits the storyline, but it just didn't get it。 I think maybe if I'd read the first books first I would have been more connected to the characters。 Nothing against the author, well written, just not my cup of tea。 I know it's based on actual people, which limits the storyline, but it just didn't get it。 I think maybe if I'd read the first books first I would have been more connected to the characters。 Nothing against the author, well written, just not my cup of tea。 。。。more

The denouement is an exemplary specimen of why I don't want to read spy novels。 And with the Cannon-Sullivan marriage having been celebrated only in the opening chapters here, I'm now cliff-hung about its solidity! So, despite and because of disappointment, this one is on my Look for Sequels list that the Salt Lake City library system helps me maintain。 The denouement is an exemplary specimen of why I don't want to read spy novels。 And with the Cannon-Sullivan marriage having been celebrated only in the opening chapters here, I'm now cliff-hung about its solidity! So, despite and because of disappointment, this one is on my Look for Sequels list that the Salt Lake City library system helps me maintain。 。。。more

It is 1933 and the Nazis have just taken power in Germany。 In England, Louisa Cannon is asked to accompany part of the Mitford family, her former employer, on a European cruise。 At first she refuses since she has just recently married Guy, a DC with the CID and she is studying to be a stenographer。 However, she is approached by Iain, a government agent, who asks her to reconsider。 Diana, one of the Mitford daughters is having an affair with Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, It is 1933 and the Nazis have just taken power in Germany。 In England, Louisa Cannon is asked to accompany part of the Mitford family, her former employer, on a European cruise。 At first she refuses since she has just recently married Guy, a DC with the CID and she is studying to be a stenographer。 However, she is approached by Iain, a government agent, who asks her to reconsider。 Diana, one of the Mitford daughters is having an affair with Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, and Iain wants Louisa to discover any useful information she can about the fascists' plans。 He also asks her to keep her purpose for deciding to go on the cruise a secret even from Guy。 Louisa agrees but this becomes a lot harder when Guy surprises her by joining her on the ship shortly before a murder occurs。The Mitford Trial is the fourth in The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes but the first I have read。 As a result, I was unaware that it was based on true events。 At first, it seems like a classic locked room mystery but it soon becomes clear that this will not be that。。。or at least not just that。 The action on the ship is interrupted occasionally by the later trial and although I guessed the murderer fairly quickly, I did not guess the motive or the outcome。 Definitely one for fans of the series or anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a touch of the Golden Age and given depth by real historical characters and details。Thanks to Netgalley and St martin's press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review 。。。more
